Event name: Birth and Death Cafe

Date: 8 August 2016

Event details: The Birth and Death Cafe is an opportunity to share personal experiences and thoughts around both birth and death.

Dying has been described as the “labour phase” of death. Both birth and death are natural inescapable processes which we all experience but which are often feared in modern society. Like birth, dying can be incredibly traumatic and disempowering for the person who is dying and those around him or her, but it can also be a very positive and profound experience.

With both birth and dying, planning ahead and letting family members and medical care providers know your wishes can be beneficial.

Having conversations and exploring our feelings can help facilitate the reduction of fear and make both the beginning and end of life more comfortable and more about love than pain.

This event is designed for the “sandwich generation”, parents of young or teenage children who may be also concerned about their ageing parents, however, anyone interested in having a conversation around birth and/or death is welcome to attend.

It is a variation on the Death Cafe concept (see deathcafe.com) and does not have a set agenda.

Children welcome, there is a covered enclosed outdoor play area, miniature pigs Morris and Missy Piggins, chickens and a veggie patch.

Event name: DYING WELL – The practicalities of planning for the inevitable

Date: 10 August 2016

Event details: We're all familiar with the idea of living well, but dying well is a bit of a strange concept. Our superstitions and fears about dying, and the discomfort we feel about discussing death, often mean we avoid the topic. But we all need to plan for the inevitable.

What do you need to think about when planning your estate? What sort of funeral service do you want? Do you want to be buried or cremated? What are the possible effects of grief on a family? How do you know what all your choices are?

There are so many questions – and this is your chance to ask them to our expert panel.

- Gerard Basha (Executive Lawyer at Bartier Perry Lawyers)
- Dale Maroney (CEO at Walter Carter Funerals)
- Graham Boyd (CEO at Southern Metropolitan Cemetaries Trust)
- Donna Drew-Morris (Bereavement Care Co-ordinator at Walter Carter Funerals)

No question is too big or too small, so ask away! Let us help you plan ahead for the inevitable.

Drinks and canapes will be provided.

Event name: Let's talk about death

Date: Friday, August 26, 2016

Event details: Dying to Know Day is held on the 8th of August but the month of August is used as a vehicle to create an open conversation about death. Death is a subject we often shy away from. It means the end of our life, can mean sickness and suffering, and with it, the right to choose an end versus spiritual belief.

How we frame the conversation around death helps inform our ability to cope. So let's have an open and candid conversation about what death is, what it symbolises to us and investigate the idea of quality versus quantity of life.

In Hacking Happiness, there are no right or wrong answers. Only sensitive, empowered and thoughtful exploration.

Event name: Matters of Life & Death Workshop Series - Death Care... Laying out and tending the body for the Vigil

Date: Saturday 13th August 2016

Event details: This workshop will cover the phenomenology of dying and death, palliative care options, dealing with pain, caring for the dying patient and the meaning of the vigil. A practical demonstration will be given to assist in learning how to participate in caring for the dying person.
Caring for the dying is about how to be selfless and nurturing. It will focus on how to confront our own fears and our relationship to pain. It can be frightening to see someone in pain, anxious and/or confused. We need to learn how to acquire a quiet gentle quality of care. This is very important and can make a big difference for the dying person, their family and friends. After the passing of the soul, the vigil will follow. This is an opportunity for us to pay tribute to life on earth and it helps us to learn how to pass thresholds with the ability to surrender.
The presenters are:

  • Pippa White who is an anthroposophical nurse with extensive experience in palliative care providing solace and gentle care to dying patients.
  • Irmhild Kleinhenz is an anthroposophical integrative health professional and educator with thirty years experience in support work with many facets of heath and death care.

Event name: CASTING THE NET- WHEN SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS DYING, WHAT ROLE WILL YOU PLAY?

Date: Saturday 13th August

Event details: Cast your net and draw from the Natural Death Advocacy Network (NDAN) to learn how you can offer support to your community when someone is dying – or at least where to find it!

Your feedback tells us that you really enjoy the opportunity to network amongst each other so you will be immersed into an afternoon of wonderful opportunities to link with other likeminded souls, join the conversation and gain greater insight into developments in the natural death movement.

Over tapas at Melbourne’s Kent Hotel (Carlton), you will be guided through a productive discussion of the role community can play when one of its own is dying.

This event will focus on a number of case studies and speculate as to how each person in the room can draw upon their own experiences, personal or professional, to contribute to the holistic care of the dying, the family and the broader community. You will leave the day better knowing how you can be of support and how you can find support when the time comes.

This event is proudly facilitated by the Natural Death Advocacy Network and will be guided by our experienced professionals working in the field of death and dying:

  • Sally Cant (Family Death Care Advocate, author of Conversations about Death, Celebrant and Educator),
  • Libby Moloney (Holistic Funeral Director and owner of Natural Grace Ⓡ)
  • Dr. Pia Interlandi (Death practitioner and designer of Garments For The Grave)
  • And our Master of Ceremonies

Event name: Dying to Know Day - We are dying to know what you know...

Date: 8th August 2016

Event details: The Bereavement Support Program, part of the Paediatric Palliative Care Service at the
Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital will again honour Dying to Know Day by demonstrating our
ongoing commitment to:
• The care of families whose children have died
• The important connection between the hospital and our community partners to ensure
the very best of care for families following the death of their child;

Bereaved families continue to share with us the challenges they experience in knowing what supports are available in the community and how to access this support. Similarly, as a Bereavement Service we are often approached by colleagues seeking guidance around referral pathways for families following the death of a child.

The over-arching goal of this networking event is to come together to gain insight as a community of bereavement care referrers and providers around what support is available and how to enhance care pathways for bereaved families.

We would like to extend an invitation to our community-based partners involved in the care of families following the death of a child, to join us for an afternoon where we share information about our respective support programs, disseminate resources and formalise a bereavement care network.

We are Dying to Know … what you know?

So on the day we invite a representative from each service to participate in a five minute ‘speed session’ to:

  • Present a one page PowerPoint slide giving an overview of what support to grieving families is provided by your service;
  • Describe any challenges experienced in supporting bereaved families or for bereaved families accessing the service

We will then collate this information and invite you/your service to become part of an ongoing bereavement care network/advocacy group.

Please join us to help us launch the open sourcing of TACSI's innovative support model for family/community carers - 'Weavers' (www.weavers.tacsi.org.au). Weavers provide individualised support to carers from someone who has been a carer themselves.

Open source refers to a program which is available to the general public for use and/or adaptation from its original design free of charge. It is a collaborative effort in which adopters improve upon the program and share the changes within the community.

Excitingly this will be the first time an ageing and caring related service will have been open sourced in South Australia.
