Event name: Dying to Know Day - Barwon health 'Pop Up Information and Resources Booth'

Event details: Barwon Health will celebrate National D2KD by providing two information booths at University Hospital Geelong Cafeteria and Mckellar Centre café between 10.00am – 3.00pm. The booths will be managed by ACP and Palliative Care program staff and volunteers. 
The aim is to encourage conversations about death, dying and bereavement and improve death literacy through a variety of interactive and creative activities including, social media, expanding on our 2016 D2KD tree of memories (this year’s theme will be: “What does a good death look like to you?”), creating ‘Bucket Lists’, the provision of written information, website resources and face to face discussions with the assistance of our staff, volunteers and members of the Executive Team. As our population continues to grow, so does the demand for quality palliative care for those that require it. Effective communication is essential for the delivery of high-quality care but can be particularly difficult in palliative care. Health professionals can take the lead when it comes to discussing end of life issues, but often identify difficulty in dealing with strong emotions and have limited training in this area.
By having informal conversations regarding death and dying, facilitated by an expert, we aim to assist health and community care professionals from across the region to communicate with patients/clients earlier, and improve patient
and family outcomes in the terminal phase of a patient’s life.

Join us for this insightful and reflective exploration of death and dying, and the ways that our pets connect and prepare us for this life event.

Dr Alicia Kennedy is human animal bond veterinarian and founder of Cherished Pets, a social veterinary enterprise that offers palliative pet care and home euthanasia services as well as a signature home pet care service for elderly and disabled people living independently in our community. Through her work, Dr Alicia has identified ways that pets facilitate our very own conversations around mortality and death.

Barbara Allen is an experienced pet bereavement counsellor who has supported thousands of families through pet loss. She established the pet loss support service at Lort Smith Animal Hospital and shares a deep and intrinsic understanding of the role pets play in our experiences, attitudes and acceptance of death. As a trained Spiritual Counsellor, Barbara brings a gentle and effective voice to this important conversation.

In this workshop we will engage in a conversation and share stories and strategies that help us manage pet loss, support pets and their people through end of life stages, and develop our understanding of this topic. 

This session is recommended for people who love pets, who work with people who love pets, health professionals, service providers, counsellors, advance care planning personnel, and those who have recently lost a pet, a know someone who has been affected by pet loss.

Event details: Presented by Soul Arts, this is an intimate open mic on the theme of death, dying, grief and loss, and an open space for conversations on these topics. There will also be a candlelight vigil in the space where you can light a candle and place a picture of a loved one if you so wish.
