Dying to Know 2018 Expo.jpg

Event details: Remembrance Parks Central Victoria are hosting a free information expo, which will include guest speakers, valuable information stalls, crematorium and memorialisation tours and insightful activities to help generate discussion around the topics Dying to Know Day addresses.

A range of different guest speakers and stall holders are set to attend the event, including death doulas, DonateLife Victoria, local funeral directors, health care organisations such as St John of God Hospital and the Bendigo Health Library; as well as those who can offer financial advice for end of life planning such as the Australian Friendly Society and State Trustees
.
The event will also involve Eliza Jane Gilchrist, co-director of the visual theatre/art company Such As They Are. The company will be hosting the ‘Once And For All’ exhibition, showcased in November-December this year in the Bendigo Chapel.

The project will combine sculpture, visuals and puppetry to tell the stories of some of the people interred at the site and by so doing address our own mortality. The performance will bring the inevitability of death into focus and yet ultimately be uplifting.

We encourage all community members of the City of Greater Bendigo Region to attend this free event and learn more about a topic seldom discussed in our everyday lives.

Event name: TEDx Melbourne

Date: Monday 13th August 2018

Event time: 8am - 5:45pm

Event details (provide a brief overview of the speakers and/or topics): Associate Professor Ronika Power from Macquarie University will deliver a talk at TEDx Melbourne entitled "Do Death Differently".

Challenging us to rethink convention, Ronika will discuss a topic that has been stigmatised and tabooed in the modern Western world – death. In her work, Ronika has explored how different cultures around the world have approached dying, death, burial and grief throughout history. What she has discovered stands in stark contrast to the way modern Western culture has clinicised and sterilised these unavoidable natural processes; rather than helping us, this often appears to compound our experiences of grief following the loss of a loved one. In our efforts to protect ourselves from pain and discomfort, have we become ‘death-denying’? In only a few generations, have we forgotten how to ‘do’ death? Small communities in Australia are leading a burgeoning global movement to reconnect with the extraordinary opportunities for growth, learning, bonding and ‘ripening’ that emerge through death, prompting them to reclaim the ancient human right and privilege to take care of their own. In this talk, Ronika will weave their stories through her own research, training and experiences and invite you to explore how you might ‘do’ death differently in your own family and community.

This independent TEDx event is operated under license from TED. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. This event is called TEDx Melbourne, where x=independently organized TED event. At TEDx Melbourne, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including TEDx Melbourne, are self-organized.
