Event name: Death Dinner Party

Event details: Death Dinner Party: What's the Alternative?

We live in a society that is safe, abundant and free. But it’s also a society in which we long ago gave away our connection with death and dying. We’ve outsourced it to nursing homes and funeral corporations. We’ve lost knowledge, traditions and rituals. One of the biggest things we’ve lost is choice – choice in how we die and choice in how we are farewelled.

But what if there was a new choice – to live forever. Would you take it?

At this Death Dinner Party winter feast, two very different speakers – Annie Bolitho, end-of-life consultant, and Meow-Ludo Meow Meow, molecular biologist and transhumanist – will talk to us about death and choice: from making empowered, meaningful decisions about how we die, through to the ultimate choice – to not die at all.

Event name: Mocktails and Mortality

Event details: Enjoy canapes and a complimentary mocktail as you chat about death and dying, with Julie Hassard, Ambassador for death over dinner...

As our population continues to grow, so does the demand for quality palliative care for those that require it. Effective communication is essential for the delivery of high-quality care but can be particularly difficult in palliative care. Health professionals can take the lead when it comes to discussing end of life issues, but often identify difficulty in dealing with strong emotions and have limited training in this area.
By having informal conversations regarding death and dying, facilitated by an expert, we aim to assist health and community care professionals from across the region to communicate with patients/clients earlier, and improve patient
and family outcomes in the terminal phase of a patient’s life.

Event name: Pets, Death & Dying - how pets facilitate conversations around death and dying

Event details: How our pets facilitate conversations around death and dying

An official Dying To Know Day event

Join us for this insightful and reflective exploration of death and dying, and the ways that our pets connect and prepare us for this life event.

Dr Alicia Kennedy is human animal bond veterinarian and founder of Cherished Pets, a social veterinary enterprise that offers palliative pet care and home euthanasia services as well as a signature home pet care service for elderly and disabled people living independently in our community. Through her work, Dr Alicia has identified ways that pets facilitate our very own conversations around mortality and death.

Barbara Allen is an experienced pet bereavement counsellor who has supported thousands of families through pet loss. She established the pet loss support service at Lort Smith Animal Hospital and shares a deep and intrinsic understanding of the role pets play in our experiences, attitudes and acceptance of death. As a trained Spiritual Counsellor, Barbara brings a gentle and effective voice to this important conversation.

In this workshop we will engage in a conversation and share stories and strategies that help us manage pet loss, support pets and their people through end of life stages, and develop our understanding of this topic.

This session is recommended for people who love pets, who work with people who love pets, health professionals, service providers, counsellors, advance care planning personnel, and those who have recently lost a pet, a know someone who has been affected by pet loss.

This event has been kindly sponsored by Kings Funerals and Edenhills Pet Cremation to raise funds for Cherished Pets Foundation
